Die gestische, dem abstrakten Expressionismus zugehörige Malerei von Cris Pink nimmt in ihrer neuesten Serie „offshore“ gegenständlicheren Charakter an. Zugrunde liegen Aquarelle von Landschaften in Küstennähe. Sie stellen ihre unmittelbare Umgebung – Cris Pink lebt seit 30 Jahren auf Mallorca – ebenso dar, wie Aquarelle, die die Künstlerin auf Reisen anfertigte, etwa in Patagonien. Die charakteristischen Physiognomien dieser Landschaften verlieren sich aber durch den Auftrag zahlreicher dünner Ölschichten auf der Leinwand, lösen sich in Licht und Farbe beinahe auf.
Gemeint ist hier wie in ihren früheren Werkserien nicht die äußere Erscheinungsform. Die materielle Erscheinung, so die Künstlerin, bedingt sich durch das Unsichtbare der inneren Erfahrung. Dazu gehört vor allem die Darstellung der Materialität des durchsichtigen, in steter Bewegung befindlichen Elements Wasser mit seinen unendlichen Variationen der Spiegelungen des Lichtes und der Umgebung auf der Oberfläche wie die Erfahrung des Flüchtigen, Vergänglichen und Symbolischen der Substanz in seiner flüssigen, gasförmigen und festen Form. Wir wissen, dass in der Psychologie seit C.G. Jung das Wasser für Gefühle und all das steht, was sich dem Verstand entzieht. Tränen sind im Märchen das Wasser der Seele, die auch zu Eis erstarren können und für Unbeweglichkeit und Gefühlskälte stehen. „Sich im Wasser spiegeln“ steht für die Selbsterkenntnis, nicht nur immer selbstverliebt wie Narziss. Spiegelflächen schlechthin galten als Durchgang in die Welt der Toten, ein Grund, weshalb die Sitte entstand, im Haus von Verstorbenen die Spiegel zu verhängen. Im Glauben der Germanen sind die Seelen der Ungeborenen und Verstorbenen im Wasser beheimatet, worauf noch heute die etymologische Bedeutung des Wortes „Seele“ hinweist. So finden wir einen ungeheuren Reichtum an Mythen in Märchen, in der Literatur, der Kunst und der Religion vor, ein Reichtum, an den die Künstlerin in ihren Wasserbildern anknüpft.
Cris Pink studiert Modedesign in Hamburg und Kunstpädagogik in Mainz. Seit 1983 lebt sie in Spanien. Ausstellungen in Frankfurt a.M., Mainz, Koblenz, Barcelona und Palma de Mallorca. 1994 gründete sie die Designschule „Blau“ in Palma. Daneben unterrichtete sie an der Helwan University in Kairo und der Universidad de las Islas Baleares in Palma de Mallorca.

In her latest series, offshore, Cris Pink’s gestural paintings that are strongly linked to Expressionism reveal figurative characteristics. They are based on watercolors of landscapes in coastal areas, representing the artist’s immediate home environment—she has been residing on the Island of Majorca for thirty years—as well as sites that she has visited on journeys to Patagonia and other places. Yet due to the application of countless thin layers of oil paint on the canvas, the specific physiognomies of these landscapes almost appear to dissolve into light and color. As was already the case with regard to her earlier painting series, this is not a matter of the works’ external manifestation. As the artist explains, the material appearance is determined by an intrinsic experience. This applies particularly to the representation of the changing materiality of the translucent element of water that is constantly in motion in its infinite variations of reflecting the light and the world surrounding it on its surface, incorporating the experience of the ephemeral and the symbolic quality of the substantial in its liquid, gaseous, and solid forms. Since C.G. Jung’s psychological writings on archetypes, we are aware of the fact that water stands for emotions and the regions that evade the analytical sphere of the mind. In fairytales, tears represent the water of the soul, which can freeze like ice, indicating immobility and coldness; the mirror reflection in a pool of water refers to the self-realization that one should avoid the vain self-love of Narcissus. Mirror images per se were interpreted as passageways into the realm of the dead, from which the custom developed to cover the mirrors in the houses of the deceased. According to the beliefs of the Germanic peoples, the souls of the unborn and deceased are endemic to the water: a concept that still reverberates in the etymological meaning of the word ‘soul’. Thus, we find a tremendous wealth of related myths in fairytales, literature, art, and various religions, to which the artist makes reference in her water paintings.
Cris Pink studied fashion design and art education in Hamburg and Mainz. She has been residing in Spain since 1983 and has participated in exhibitions in Frankfurt/Main, Mainz, Koblenz, Barcelona, Palma de Majorca, and elsewhere. In 1994, she established a private school of design in Palma. She also teaches at the Helwan University in Cairo and the Universidad de las Islas Baleares in Palma de Majorca.
